Course design
HNDE is a 3 ½ year full time day course with facilities for institutional and practical studies including six months in-plant training. As all aspects of the course are conducted in English medium, Students are required to follow a 1 ½ month intensive English course before commencing the course.
Course components
All the subjects taught with an emphasis towards practical as well as theory. Adequate laboratory experiments are conducted in most of the subjects .
The students have to follow lectures and do library assignments, laboratory and workshop practical , phase tests and project and face year end examinations. The project will consist of applications based on the theoretical knowledge and skills learn through lectures and other academic activities.
Industrial visits will be organized by the respective departments with collaboration with a relevant industry.
Fields of Study
The HNDE programme can be divided in to following 3 fields.
1. Electrical/Electronic Engineering
2. Mechanical Engineering
3. Civil Engineering
Training
The National Apprentice and industrial training authority (NAITA) provides a valu added in plant training opportunities of two, three months duration; first one being after the completion of the second year and the other subsequent to the completion of the final year in the respective specialised engineering fields.
After a continuous three year course with a six month in plant training in renowned establishments in various parts of the country, students finally find an easy access to lucrative engineering careers in the ever widening professional industrial spheres in our country. It is heartening to note that the private entrepreneurs have realised the value of the HNDE and those who possess this diploma are being employed in progressively grater numbers in their establishments.
Avenues available for future career development
That the Institute of Engineering Sri Lanka (IESL) has granted:-
(a) Student memberships to those students who complete the first year of the HNDE programme.
(b) Permission to students who have successfully completed the full program (HNDE) to follow the IESL (part 1 classes)
Those who follow this course can qualify for exemption from CEI (UK) part I examination by getting a number of merits specified by the London Engineering Council.

THE HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (HNDE)
An Overview
In 1985, the National Technical Teachers Training College (NTTTC) and the Technical education unit of the Ministry of Education conducted a manpower survey in Sri Lanka, which revealed that the ratio of chartered engineers to incorporated engineers was 1:3. The survey established that a developing country’s ratio requirement of chartered engineers to incorporated engineers to technicians should be 1:5:20. The authorities realized that although adequate numbers of chartered engineers and technicians were being produced, there was a void between these two levels in the profession. Therefore steps were taken to bridge this gap by introducing a program to produce professionals who were competent in both technical and vocational skills. The Higher National Diploma in Engineering (HNDE) course, conducted under the Business and Technological Education Council (BTEC), UK, was altered according to Sri Lanka’s requirement by professors at Bolton University, UK, and introduced as a pilot program in Sri Lanka in 1986. This was the birth of HNDE here in Sri Lanka.
The HNDE is currently administered by the Engineering division of the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE), which is under the Ministry of Higher Education. The course duration is 3.5 years, including six months in plant training.
Three programs are offered by the HNDE course for the three engineering fields; Electrical, Civil and Mechanical engineering. Each field has several options and students are given the opportunity to specialize in their chosen option
Engineering is not just a career. It is a driving force in society. As a trained engineer you will be leading major changes in lives which are brought about by advances in technology. Engineers are innovators, designers & managers of these advances.
Meanwhile the diploma ensures the computer knowledge of our students which has a extensive computer laboratory with sufficient number of computers. The computer laboratory provides students with various facilities including Internet.
A well equipped library provides lending , reference and study facilities for students and staff. There is a vast collection of books in engineering sector as well in other related fields.
Accommodation and financial assistance
Hostel Facilities are available for the students who require accommodation. A limited number of ‘Mahapola scholarships’ are awarded to students who are seeking for financial assistance.
The candidates for admission should fulfill the following eligibility requirements if he / she is to be considered for enrollment.
How to Apply
Should possess four passes in one sitting in the following subjects at the G.C.E (A/L) Examination conducted by the Commissioner of Examinations, Sri Lanka.
